Daniel Trunfio, Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Trunfio was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of BAL in May 2010. He has over 26 years of domestic and international experience in the Oil and renewable fuels industries.
Mr. Trunfio started his professional career with Royal Dutch Shell Petroleum Company in 1984 and held increasing leadership roles including Vice President and General Manager. In
2003, he led the development and implementation of Shell's 1st and 2nd generation bio-fuel strategies and operations worldwide. In this role, he was responsible for managing Shell's
strategic bio-fuel Joint Ventures portfolio in the Americas as well as working as the liaison with external stakeholders and Governments. Mr. Trunfio also held a number of leadership
roles in Shell's commercial, marketing, trading and supply businesses.
Immediately prior to joining BAL, Mr. Trunfio was Chief Operating Officer at Aventine Renewable Energy where he was responsible for full profit and loss (P&L) management and
operational leadership of more than 300 employees, manufacturing, sales, trading, risk management, regulatory compliance, technology, and capital expansion.
Ric Lucien, Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Lucien joined BAL as its Chief Financial Officer in December 2010. He brings to BAL 26 years of experience in management of the finance, M&A, human resource, IT, legal, facilities, outsourced manufacturing and administrative organizations of multi-subsidiary international companies and for whom he has helped raise over $150 million in public and private financings. He has served as Chief Financial Officer of Remend, Inc., Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer at Boostworks, Inc. and Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations, Chief Financial Officer at Centura Software Corporation (Nasdaq: CNTR). Mr. Lucien has a total of six years public accounting and consulting experience at Deloitte & Touche (DTT, Osaka, Japan and TR & Co., San Francisco), where he supported clients from a variety of industries in both audit and corporate finance capacities. He is a Certified Public Accountant (California) and holds a BS in Business Administration from California State University, Hayward.
Dr. Richard Bailey, Chief Technology Officer
Dr. Bailey has spent approximately 35 years in the industrial biotechnology sector, having been involved in the commercialization of multiple specialty and commodity chemicals over this time span. He has participated in every phase of fermentation process development, from developing or leading the efforts for strain engineering, to managing fermentation process development and multi-disciplinary teams involved in piloting and scaling up laboratory technology. Prior to joining Bio Architecture Lab, he was CEO and Founder of Microbia, Inc., a majority owned subsidiary of Ironwood Pharmaceutical engaged in the development and commercialization of specialty chemicals in fungi. Before joining Microbia in 2002, he held senior management positions for several divisions of Monsanto with responsibilities for programs in both fermentation process development and agricultural biotechnology, and prior to joining Monsanto, he was VP of R&D for ZeaGen, a start-up biotechnology company based on Colorado.
Dr. Yasuo Yoshikuni, Co-Founder & Chief Science Officer
Dr. Yoshikuni co-founded Bio Architecture Lab and has developed the first platform technology of synthetic biology that enables the conversion of a previously untapped
feedstock (seaweed) into a variety of chemicals. He currently directs BAL's core research programs and Intellectual Property efforts. Dr. Yoshikuni brings a decade of
research experiences in protein engineering, computational enzyme design, and metabolic engineering into BAL. He has authored numerous publications including Nature and
Chemistry & Biology. Dr. Yoshikuni completed his Ph.D. at University of California, Berkeley with Professor Jay D. Keasling. He then pursued a post-doctorate as a Howard
Hughes Medical Institute and Jane Coffin Child's memorial fellow at University of Washington, Seattle with Professor David Baker.
Yuki Kashiyama, Co-founder, General Manager of Global Biomass Sourcing
Mr. Kashiyama co-founded Bio Architecture Lab after a successful career at Boston Consulting Group in its biotechnology and pharmaceuticals practice, where he received
"the consultant of the year award" from BCG Japan. He currently leads BAL's global biomass sourcing operations and also leads business development in Asia. Mr. Kashiyama has extensive experience in strategy and business development and has very deep knowledge of seaweed aquafarming and sourcing businesses. He received his MBA from Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley and his BE from the University of Tokyo in Chemistry & Biotechnology.
Ajay Kshatriya, General Manager, Chemicals
Mr. Kshatriya maintains overall accountability for BAL Chemicals including technology development, manufacturing, and strategic partnerships. Prior to this role, he led BAL's efforts in Commercial Development. Prior to joining BAL, he was as an investor at the venture capital firm X/Seed Capital, a senior manager in operations at Genentech, and an engineer at BioKinetics (Acquired by Alfa Laval). Ajay holds a BS in Chemical Engineering and MBA from UC Berkeley and an MS in Engineering from Stanford University; he is a professional engineer in the State of California.
Donald "Chip" Allgrove, Gerente General, BAL Chile
Ret. Colonel Allgrove leads BAL's operations and business development in Chile. After over 20 years of service as a Special Operations officer in the U.S. Military, Chip transitioned into various roles within the biotech and life science industries. In addition to his strong operations background, Chip has extensive experience in strategic planning, business development, project management, and marketing. His efforts in business development have led to multiple grant awards including one grant in excess of $400 million. Chip received his Bachelor's Degree from West Point and Master's Degree from the Naval Postgraduate School.

Michael Borrus, General Partner, X/Seed Capital
Michael is the founding general partner of X/Seed Capital. Prior to founding X/Seed, he was an Executive in Residence at Mohr Davidow Ventures in Silicon Valley. He is the author
of books and articles on topics such as management of technology, high technology competition, and financial strategies for technology companies. He is also a frequent speaker before
corporate and public audiences, and has appeared in numerous media outlets from CNN and NPR to Business Week and the New York Times. Michael serves on the Advisory Committee to the
U.S. Government's Advanced Technology Program, and several National Academy of Science/National Research Council Steering Committees. He is an honors graduate of Harvard Law School,
the University of California, Berkeley and Princeton University, as well as a member of the California State Bar.
Felipe Camposano, General Partner, Austral Capital
Felipe is a general partner at Austral Capital and also serves as Strategic Planning Chair for the ASEM-BIO (the Chilean Biotechnology Association). He currently holds board seats
at Lucien Biotech (which he co-founded), and at the Agro Biotech Center of DICTUC, the technology transfer arm of Universidad Católica de Chile. Prior to joining Austral, Felipe
directed New Business Development at Fundación Chile where he created and invested in new technology companies. Felipe was founder and CEO of INTRA, delivering enterprise knowledge
management solutions to Global 1000 firms and was co-founder of NEXION, providing technology development services to Latin American companies in China. He has served as consultant
and advisor at CORFO-Invest and ProChile, promoting international investment in Chile; new project valuation at OPS&S in Argentina, Brazil and Chile; and technology advisor to
CORFO-Innova, the Chilean Development Agency. Filipe has taught the Technology Entrepreneur Marketing course at Universidad Católica de Chile, written the investor column at
BioNexa (RedCiencia) and won national and international innovation awards for his patents (PCT/IB2007/050917). Felipe holds a BSc. in Computer Sciences and a MSc. in Industrial
Engineering from Universidad Católica de Chile.
Sigurd M. Paulsen, Investment Director, Statoil ASA
Since 2007 Sigurd has been an investment director with Statoil ASA, ($75 billion market cap, NYSE/OSE listed oil & gas/renewable energy) responsible for Statoil's equity ownership positions in 35+ oil/gas/renewable technology companies. He has extensive investment and divestment experience as the previous Head of Statoil Corporate M&A as well as responsibility for Statoil's pension fund investments in private equity funds. Sigurd has been and currently is a board member of several technology start-up companies and seed funds. Sigurd has broad international work experience (Norwegian Export Council, Germany, Berliner Handels-und Frankfurter Bank, Germany, Tenneco, USA, Statoil, USA) and bachelors and masters degrees in finance and accounting from St.Gallen Switzerland.
Alex Seelenberger, Partner and Managing Director, Aurus Bios
Alex Seelenberger joined Aurus in early 2009, and is currently Partner and Managing Director of Aurus Bios, the first Chilean Life Science focused venture capital fund. He currently serves on the board of various portfolio companies, including Andes Biotechnologies, Phytotox and PLx Pharma, as well as Asembio (Chilean Biotechnology Association). Between 2007-2009, Alex worked for Athelera LLC, an M&A advisory boutique, based in New York. Prior to Athelera, from 2002 to 2005, he was a consultant for the Boston Consulting Group, where he focused primarily in the pharmaceutical, mining and financial services industries across Latin America. Alex has also lectured in several courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels at the University of Chile's Business School. Alex Seelenberger earned his Business Engineering degree from the University of Chile and an MBA with High Distinction from Harvard Business School, where he graduated as a Baker Scholar.
